Porto preserves one of the most distinctive cultural expressions of north-western Iberia: Portexo, the traditional local speech spoken by generations of its inhabitants.

Porto’s location, in the westernmost part of Zamora Province and close to Galicia, helped preserve a speech variety with strong Galician-Portuguese roots. Its historical isolation among the Segundera, Calva and Cabrera mountain ranges allowed many words, expressions and grammatical features to survive to the present day.

The German linguist and ethnographer Fritz Krüger visited Porto during the winter of 1921–1922 and carried out some of the first scientific studies of the area’s language and traditional culture. In his work, he identified Porto as one of the most representative communities of what he called Galician Sanabria.

Words such as auga (water), noite (night), muiño (mill), lagoa (lake), bidul (birch), castañeiro (chestnut tree) and anduriña (swallow) are part of a vocabulary closely linked to the landscape and traditional mountain life.

More than a way of speaking, Portexo is a living cultural heritage that preserves the collective memory, traditional occupations, place names and historical identity of Porto.
