15. Porto–Alta Sanabria Starlight Reserve

When night falls over the mountains of Porto, one of the most remarkable natural spectacles in Alta Sanabria begins. Far from large cities and light pollution, the sky fills with stars, revealing a darkness that is becoming increasingly rare across Europe.

The entire municipality of Porto, covering more than 200 km² of mountains, lakes and forests, is part of the Porto–Alta Sanabria Starlight Reserve, an international recognition that protects the quality of the night sky and promotes its responsible enjoyment.

The combination of altitude, well-preserved natural landscapes and very low levels of artificial lighting makes this area an exceptional place to observe the Milky Way, meteor showers, eclipses or simply enjoy the silence beneath a sky full of stars.

Yet the stars are not the only attraction. During summer nights, fireflies also illuminate the darkness, reminding us of the importance of preserving natural night environments. While watching the sky, you may hear the call of an owl or the distant howl of a wolf.

From the Peñas Blancas Astronomical Viewpoint and other elevated locations, every clear night offers a different experience. An eclipse, a full moon, the Perseid meteor shower or the sight of the Milky Way may become the highlight of your visit.
