Let the first rays of sunlight find you exploring the remote summits of the Segundera, Cabrera and Calva mountain ranges. In Porto, every trail offers the opportunity to discover one of the most spectacular and best-preserved mountain landscapes in north-western Iberia.
The municipality lies at the heart of the Lake Sanabria and Segundera and Porto Mountain Ranges Natural Park, a glacial landscape of high-mountain lakes, peat bogs, granite outcrops, heathlands and extensive forests. One of its greatest landmarks is Peña Trevinca (2,127 m), the highest mountain in Galicia and one of the most iconic peaks in north-western Spain.
Porto is also one of the leading mountain destinations in Castile and León for hikers and trail runners thanks to the Porto de Sanabria Trail Running Center (TRC), a network of marked routes that explores some of the wildest and most spectacular scenery in the region.
Among the best-known routes are the GR-84 Sanabria Mountain Trail, linking some of the most representative landscapes of the area, Trail No. 8 Porto through Val de Sirgas and Val de Inferno, crossing glacial valleys and high-mountain terrain, and Trail No. 13 Laguna de la Clara, leading to one of Porto’s most beautiful and secluded glacial lakes.
Nature can also be heard. The song of the bluethroat, the autumn rutting calls of red deer, the hooting of nocturnal birds of prey and, on occasion, the distant howl of wolves all form part of the experience of walking through these mountains.
